>iChange, Apple’s Glimpse of the Future.

>Last week I received a solicitation via email for Apple TV. I believe it’s the genesis of what watching TV will soon be all about; entertainment totally on demand. In the future we won’t watch Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday nights (I don’t anyway), we’ll watch whatever we want, whenever we want, and we’ll watch it without commercials.

Don’t worry, they’ll find a way to make us pay for it, they same way we pay to load our iPod. But in the future, we won’t be watching commercials during our show. We won’t even have to push the fast forward button on our DVR or try to time hitting the “play” button at just the right moment at the end of the commercial set.

How does this affect a small business owner trying to market his business? It is already becoming perilous to advertise on local TV because of the soon to be ubitquitous DVR. Local advertisers should not advertise on any show that people aren’t likely to watch live. This includes most of prime time and most daytime programming.

Eventually, the DVR will be succeeded by the ATV (Apple TV) and everything you watch on your flat panel will be downloaded via the internet. Local TV commericals as we know them today will become a thing of the past.
