If you think you’ve got a great idea and you can’t find at least one person who doesn’t like the idea, trash it. Because it’s not going to stand out. What you have is an idea that doesn’t offend anyone. What you don’t have is a great idea.

Take this campaign by Steven Singer Jewelers, I hate Steve Singer. My guess is that everyone does not love this campaign. Who would think women in lingerie taking bubble baths would be a great marketing idea for a jewelry store? Now you are going to click on the link, aren’t you?

Sales are up 15-20 percent annually since the start of the campaign.

When you are coming up with your marketing ideas, don’t just look for agreement. Find at least one person who hates your idea. You might just be on to something then…
