>My social friends are always surprised when they see me in a suit during business hours. They ask me why I wear a suit anyway. After all, I own my own business now and I can wear anything I want. This is not true.

I dress in a suit because it’s better for my business. I charge my clients a premium for my services. It would be hip to wear a flower shirt, maybe get a ponytail (not an option for me, see my pic) or have my left ear pierced.

Small businesses often use a cavalier attitude when dressing their business. I see few small businesses who take the time to dress their business in a nice suit. “Why have a dress code or uniforms? Didn’t I open my business so I could do things the way I wanted to do them?”

I know, it’s tough to spend money on a nice floor for your business. It’s tough not to skimp on a dozen other things like shelves, or a nice door, or decent signage to outfit your business.

But it’s important.

Remember that access to your business is not just about the physical location. Psychological access may actually be more important. Within the first three seconds that your customer comes in contact with you, they have passed judgement on your business. And after the first impression is made, it is virtually impossible to change.

So spend a little time, effort, and yes money, clothe your business in a nice suite.
