>You Should Not Blog

>So in part one of our “Who Should Blog” series, we threw out the big question; Should you blog as a small business?

The answer was probably. Blogging is a quick way to establish credibility and become a resource for your customers.

In part two we gave you four big reasons to blog if you are a small business:
1. You have a website
2. You have a service business
3. Your product requires some thought before a purchase is made
4. You have the potential for an ongoing relationship with your customer.

Today we’ll help you decide whether or not to take the final step.

No, You Shouldn’t
Given all the information above, you know you should blog. But maybe you shouldn’t.

And here’s why: it aint easy. I mean it’s easy to get set up. If you started right now, you could have your first blog post up and running in less than 10 minutes. But that’s not what I mean.

The act of blogging itself is time consuming. It’s not just the act of writing the blog itself. It’s the thinking process. Because once you start a blog, you have a blog.

Having a blog is like having a baby. It has to be fed all the time. Even if you can’t hear it crying, you can feel it calling you.

It takes time. I probably spend 12 hours a week blogging on my two blogs. But I think about my blogs about half the time that I’m not blogging. Maybe you’re not as obsessive as I am, but blogging is not something you do just one time. Even if you only blog once a week (I would recommend no less than that), that’s still 52 times a year.

In addition, your blog has to be coherent and useful. That requires a certain amount of writing skill. You don’t have to be Hemmingway, but you do have to be able to string together a few sentences in a convincing manner.

Yes, You Should
All this sounds as if I’m trying to discourage you from blogging. Because I am. The world does not need another half-hearted crappy blog. So if you aren’t ready to make the commitment to birth a blog, don’t do it.

On the other hand, if I still haven’t been able to dissuade you, if you are ready to raise a blog, if the labor pains don’t scare you, then by all means, do blog. Because like raising children, despite the pain and tribulation, it’s very rewarding. Plus, there’s no college tuition bill coming in 18 years.

So, get started! Today….or with my next post on how to get started blogging for your small business. Check back this week.
